Présentation du banc d’arguin
Le banc d’arguin se situe à l’entrée du Bassin d’Arcachon, entre la Dune du Pilat et la Pointe du Cap Ferret. Ce banc d’arguin représente le plus vaste banc de sable du littoral Aquitain. Des millions de mètres cubes d’eau viennent remplir puis vider le bassin d’Arcachon plusieurs fois par jour: le banc d’arguin est constamment en mouvement. Il arrive que d’une année sur l’autre le banc se divise en plusieurs banc, ou qu’il se rapproche de la Dune du Pilat. A marée basse sa surface représente environ 4 kilomètres de long sur 2 kilomètres de large.
Le banc d’arguin est bordé par les passes nord et sud du bassin. Les passes comprenaient autrefois deux autres bancs : le banc du Chien, et le banc du Toulinguet.
Cet endroit est très prisé par les plaisanciers surtout au moment de l’été, lors d’un pique-nique « huitres-rosé-cannelé », touristes parisiens, bordelais et arcachonnais se côtoient avec la Dune et l’océan comme seuls horizon. Les ostréiculteurs apprécient aussi cet endroit, moins pour son cadre et plus pour l’abri que le banc offre à leurs parcs à huitres. Le Banc d’Arguin plait beaucoup aux nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux migrateurs, comme les sternes Caugeks d’Europe.
